GENERAL
DESCRIPTION & APPLICATIONS
|
The
term of cyanogen refers to the radical CN- (symbol Cy)
or to the molecule that the two cyano groups are bonded
together at their carbon atoms (N≡C−C≡N). Cyanogen is an extremely poisonous colorless
gas. Cyanogen
chloride (NCCl, CAS RN: 506-77-4), canogen
bromide (NCBr, CAS RN: 506-68-3) are molecules that one cyano group is replaced with a chlorine
and bromine atom respectively. They are useful reagent in organic synthesis
especially in the preparation of sulfonyl cyanides and
sulfonyl isocyanates as strongly electrophilic cyanogen compound
is attacked by the nucleophilic sulfur. Cyanogen bromide
is a compound also used in molecular biology. It
reacts electrophilically with the pendant hydroxyl groups of proteins and polysaccharides.
This reaction is used in forming imidocarbonate and carbamate groups.
This also used to digest some
proteins and
peptides for the production of methionine-free peptides and for peptide mapping in
proteomics. It is used as a coupling reagent for phosphoroamidate or pyrophosphate
internucleotide bonds in DNA duplexes. |
